HOW TO BUILD A BASIC BALSA WOOD BRIDGE
eg class team at school, parent/teen pair, engineering and technology students, or as a  modellers "2nd model" is always a rewarding activity.

This is a simplified truss bridge of the type used by hundreds of railways around the world to cross narrow obstacles like rivers, canals and roads which happen to be in the path of the railway.

It was intended as a half day project, but I had it completed 1 1/2 hours after starting. OK, I admit I make things fast! A novice should probably allow a full afternoon, time for learning some tricks as they go along.

Based on this project i would be inclined to think it's a nice build for someone who has maybe only used balsa wood once before, and who wants to have some enjoyable but simple experiences with this material, before starting into a full blown big balsa model kit.

Next time I will either make a more complex bridge, or instead use the little plastic i-girder lengths to make a small one model railway style, in a very accurate scale finish. Most likely, I'll do the big balsa one first, that would be more entertaining.
