Even as the first Hawker Hurricane rolled off the assembly line, the Typhoon was already on the drawing board.
Affectionately called the "Tiffy", the Typhoon was intended as a heavy powerful fighter, much bigger than Spitfire or Hurricane.
It was the most powerful single engine fighter at the time, and used the Napier Sabre engine which used a shotgun cartridge while starting up.
The tail unit mount was strengthened with fishplates on the outside, which were distinctive on all subsequent Typhoons. The chin radiator is also very distinctive.
Four 20mm Hispano cannon protruded from the wing. Eight 60lb rockets were carried on underwing storage rails.
The innovative bubble canopy with excellent all round vision was immediately copied by the US and placed without alteration on both their P-51 Mustang heavy fighter and the P-47 Razorback.
The Typhoon made it's name as a low level air-to-ground attack weapon with heavy cannon and rockets, and did tremendous damage to German 7th Army trucks, rail and tanks in Normandy and in the "Falaise Pocket" as well as hundreds of successes against the V-1 "Buzz Bomb". In October 1944, Typhoons attacked the German 15th Army headquarters at Dodrecht in the Netherlands. The Tiffies struck in three waves, killing two generals and 70 staff officers.
