Minaun Mountain & Cliffs, Achill, Co. Mayo - West facing slope
To get to Minaun (Menawn) take the Castlebar Road, from Castlebar to Newport, and then along the north shore of Clew Bay to Achill Sound. Once across the sound, take the Keel (An Caol) road. The slope is accessible from a left turn at the crossroads before you get to Keel. But first you should drive into Keel and walk out on Trawmore Strand and look at Minaun descending into the sea, to really appreciate the full grandeur of this flying location. Now, fully motivated, go back to the crossroads, (turn right going this way), and make your way to Cathedral Rocks at the south end of the beach, before going up the slope. Long walk alarm! On a calm evening bring midge repellent. The slope faces west, but there are bays with headlands in a scalloped formation, so a bit of north or south mixed in the westerly will be fine. You are facing a thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean here, so expect big winds. Bring suitable models with good penetration for this slope or you may be blown away! Dress windproof and warmly. The view out over Keel, Achill Island, Trawmore Beach and Keel Lough inland of the beach is from paradise. The picture I give here does not do it justice. Please email me your info about where you fly, so I can include it. n o r m _ f l y e r @ y a h o o . c o . u k |
